CHRONIC DISEASE IS INCREASING BY OVER 14% ANNUALLY AND RAISING FASTER THAN THE GDP IN SOME PROVINCES!
Physical activity has been found to reduce the risk of over 25 chronic conditions including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer, colon cancer, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis (PHAC, 2011).
Physical activity also has a beneficial impact on mental health (Bingham, 2009).
One study found that for each hour of moderate to vigorous activity per week, you can reduce the risk of premature death from all causes by 4 to 9% (Samitz et al, 2011).
And yet, we know that fewer than one in five Canadian adults are getting the 150 minutes of physical activity needed to achieve health benefits, while fewer than one in 10 Canadian children, aged 5 to 17, are getting 2 the 60 minutes a day of physical activity needed for healthy growth and development (Colley et al. 2011a; Colley et al, 2011b).
